The Portable You™ – Taking Charge of Your Career and Business

The Portable You™ is a model for looking at your career and your work/life. At Aurelia, we believe that you are the master of your own career

  • You have the ability to take control of your work and your life.
  • You are not tied to one job, one occupation, or one business by reasons of birth, education, or experience.
  • You have the power to change what you do, where you work, and for whom you work.

In baseball terms, you are a free agent. Furthermore, you own the bat, and the ball, and the catcher’s mitt. You possess enormous freedom to choose where you will play, and who you will play with.

How does the Portable You model work? First, you need to be willing to look at the whole spectrum of skills you possess, and willing to plan, study and strategize on where you will use them.

The World-quartersize“Give me a place to stand, and I will move the world.”

Remember Archimedes and his lever? The famous scientist and mathematician said that given a fulcrum, a long enough lever, and the correction application of effort, you can move the earth – the biggest immovable object.

Using the example of Archimedes and his lever, here are the four elements of the Portable You model:
The Portable You

Essence is your core understanding of yourself and your selling points – your preferences and motivators – as well as your talents, skills and experience

Customer is the person (client, employer) or organization that you want to move in your favour. Customer is shown as the biggest of the four elements, because your customers often seem to be large, immovable objects. Your success in landing business or winning the job you want depends on how well you understand your Customer, and how well you demonstrate that you can fulfill your Customer’s wants.

Tools are the skills, experience and training you have that give you credibility with your customer, and also the ways you in which advertise your attributes, including personal contact, networking, resumé, and participation in social media.

Effort is the type and amount of work and focus you put into understanding your selling points, identifying your Customer, and using the Tools.

The four Portable You elements are interdependent. When you understand yourself (Essence), you have a better understanding of where you want to focus your search for work (Customer). When you understand your Customer, you have a better understanding of what they are looking for, and where they are looking (Tools). Then you can focus your Effort in appropriate ways. When you bring together and apply the elements effectively, you can move the world – and win the work you really want.
