What Is The Portable You™?

The World-quartersize“Give me a place to stand, and I will move the world.”

Archimedes,  considered to be one of the three greatest mathematicians and scientists of all time (along with Newton and Gauss) was talking about the principal of the lever, whereby a person using a fulcrum, a sufficiently long lever, and correct application of effort can move the otherwise immovable object.

I use this model, which I call The Portable You™ , as an analogy and framework to help my students understand the dynamics of successful career planning and work search. The Portable YouEssence,  the fulcrum of the lever, is your understanding of yourself - your talents, your skills, preferences, motivators and so on.Customer is the person (client, employer) or organization that you want to affect (“move” ) in your favour. Tools are anything you have or use to influence the Customer in your favour, including personal contact, networking, your resumé, social media advertising, and the like; and  Effort is the type and amount of effort, creativity and focus you put into using the Tools. These four elements are inter-dependent. Understand and use each one appropriately and you will move the otherwise immovable - your Customer – and win the work you want.
